This presentation is designed for parents whose children are starting kindergarten, providing parents with an overview of Ontario’s education system and who is responsible for what. The session will focus on practical things that parents can do to help their children succeed in school.
Target Audience: Kindergarten parents
Most parents know that they need to be involved in their children’s education, but they are not sure what it means to be ‘involved’. Do they have to be a member of the school council? Do they have to be a math whiz to help with homework? Do they have to be ‘volunteer of the year’?
This presentation provides an overview of the research on parent involvement, and what actually makes a difference in terms of student success: having high expectations, talking about school, helping students develop good work habits, and reading together. The session will explore each of these areas and provide practical tips that parents can use to support their children.
Target Audience: K – 12 parents
Our education system’s current emphasis on measuring performance in the 3 R’s—reading, writing and arithmetic—while important, has created a narrow focus that is disconnected from the broader skills and competencies needed for success in school and in life.
This session will provide an overview of People for Education’s Measuring What Matters (MWM) project, which centers on defining broader areas of student success and the learning conditions that support these areas. The broad areas being explored are: creativity, citizenship, health, social-emotional learning, and quality learning environments. This session will also look at the role schools can play in the development of broad skills students will need to live happy, healthy, economically secure, civically engaged lives.
Target Audience: educators, post-secondary students, researchers
This session is designed to help parents understand Ontario’s public education system, and who they can turn to for information and support. Find out how education funding works and learn about the roles of the Ministry of Education, the Ontario College of Teachers, the Education Quality and Accountability Office, local school boards, and school staff.
Target Audience: parents (especially newcomers and kindergarten parents)
