Building Healthy Schools in Ontario
When schools support comprehensive health programs and resources—integrating all aspects of health and well-being, including mental, physical, social, sexual and relational health—the impacts on students are positive and lasting. The evidence is clear: Adding a focus on students’ health to the current focus on targets for scores in reading, writing and mathematics, improves both academic achievement and school climate.
Ontario’s schools hold the potential to improve children’s chances for success—academically, physically, socially and emotionally. The findings in this report show that if they are to live up to that potential, schools must be supported by policy and programs that are integrated, comprehensive and adequately funded.
