One of the key elements of the Measuring What Matters initiative is to engage educators in using some of the competencies in their classrooms and schools.
Measuring What Matters:
Testing the ideas
Working with educators
Since 2015, educators from nine English, French, and Catholic boards have field tested the competencies and conditions in elementary and secondary schools across Ontario. Over 100 educators – teachers, superintendents, Early Childhood Educators, and principals – have worked with our research team.
The process varied for each team, but always worked in iterative cycles: trying one approach out, adjusting, trying something new, and adjusting the approach again. In general, there were four stages to each cycle:
- Selecting competencies
- Setting conditions
- Documenting
- Collaborating

What next?
The field trials taught us a lot about assessment and measurement, the importance of consistent, specific language, and the value of these domains in education. Find out more about what we have learned.
