We bring together experts and stakeholders to tackle big challenges in public education. By working together, learning from each other, and sharing our knowledge, we develop policy-ready solutions that lay the groundwork for real change.
Convening and engagement
Working tables
People for Education’s working tables bring together experts from across sectors, to provide the direction, advice, and expertise necessary to support systemic change.
The working table process is iterative and ongoing: identify the issues, convene experts, recommend research, consult, develop policy, provide proposals for system change.
Right to Education working table
Education is a core human right, identified in both the Convention on the Rights of the Child and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. But up to now, that right has not been clearly defined in our country. Canada needs a set of rights-based indicators that clearly set out the components of an education that will prepare young people for long-term success in the 21st century.
In the fall of 2018, People for Education, in partnership with Maytree, constituted a Right to Education working table. The goal of the table is to work together to develop a Canadian Right to Education framework.
Current membership includes:
- Unicef
- Ontario’s Education Equity Secretariat
- Six Nations Polytechnic
- Toronto District School Board
- Maytree
- Equitas
- The Social Rights Advocacy Centre
- The Circle on Philanthropy and Aboriginal Peoples in Canada
Youth Policy Integration working table
There are a variety of sectors, organizations and levels of government that work to support young people. However, this work often happens in silos, with different organizations and people working in isolation from each other. There are many barriers that prevent the sharing of data, and few commonly defined indicators for success. We need to integrate and strengthen programs for children and youth, to create the opportunity for structural changes that support data-sharing across sectors, and over time.
In 2017, in partnership with Unicef Canada, People for Education constituted a Youth Policy Integration working table.
The goal is to develop a clearly defined, useful, and commonly held set of indicators to support integration of services, sharing of data, and evaluation of programs and services for children and young people throughout their development.
Current membership includes:
- The Canadian Index of Well-being
- The Higher Education Quality Council of Ontario
- Ontario Institute for Studies in Education
- Ontario Ministry of Education
- Ontario Ministry of Children and Youth Services
- YouthRex
