Roadmaps and roadblocks: Career and life planning, guidance, and streaming in Ontario’s schools

This report, based on the results from our Annual Ontario School Survey, looks at the policies, programs, and resources available to support students’ career and life planning. It finds that Ontario may be falling behind at a time when there is growing pressure to prepare students for a rapidly changing, increasingly complex future.

In response to People for Education’s Annual Ontario School Survey, 22% of elementary school principals and 10% of secondary principals reported that managing facilities is the most time-consuming part of their job. Principals are experiencing competing demands on their time – leaving them with less time to fulfill their role as curriculum leaders.

New data from People for Education show that, despite the widely recognized importance of arts education, equitable access to arts programs and resources is an ongoing challenge for Ontario’s schools. Students in small and rural schools, in schools with higher levels of poverty, and in schools with lower levels of parental education are less likely to have access to learning opportunities in the arts.

This report, based on the results from our annual school survey, identifies equity issues related to fundraising and fees in Ontario’s publicly funded schools. Fundraising inequities appear to be growing, despite the introduction of provincial fundraising guidelines in 2012.
